Malawi chairs are hand crafted from cane and water reeds in a detailed woven pattern that’s entirely distinctive. They feature a unique curved back and there are slight variations in each, making every chair unique.
Making and weaving Malawi Chairs is a long labour intensive process which takes months of planning. And the result is stunning.
As well as handcrafted beauty and durability, these woven chairs are versatile. They can easily be used as dining or occasional chairs, as well as in a pair, or on their own. It is not recommended that are used for outdoor use unless under cover as it is an organic product and the Malawi Chair must not stay damp for long periods, as mould can settle.
Chair Dimensions: 75cm wide x 60cm deep x 85cm high (the width may vary up to 5cm as each chair is handmade and unique)
Linen Seat Cushion Sizes: 5cm high for use as an occasional chair and 10cm high for use as a dining chair
The Tiliaceae shrub is used as jute for the weaving of the chairs. The shrub grows in the summer months and the long roots are harvested, coiled and dried. In the winter months there is no material available to weave these chairs, therefore weaving is limited to about 8 months of the year. Reed from the river is also incorporated into the manufacturing process.
Seat Cushions:
Linen seat cushions are available separately. There are 2 sizes, i.e. 10cm high which is recommended for use as a dining chair and either 5cm or 10cm high which is suitable for an occasional chair.
