Natalee Bowen of Indah Island is one of Australia’s most well-known and awarded designers specialising in Hamptons interiors.

Natalee is often referred to as the queen of Hamptons style in Australia whose work has been featured in many magazines and television programs such as Ready Set Reno, Luxury Homes Revealed, Dream Homes & Through the Front Gate.

She recently finished a stunning project of her own building and decorating the Hamptons home of her dreams around a farm cottage that had been part of her husband's family for generations.

Natalee and her husband created an open, airy oasis that not only integrated Hamptons style but also elements of Caribbean style and influences from elsewhere. The rural property presented challenges in the building and design process, as it is more than an hour from the city, but the final product is impeccable.

We had the chance to speak with Natalee about the inspiration for her stunning farm estate.

 1. What was your design inspiration for your home?

The Hampton’s farm estate, is based around the beautiful homes that are in the Hamptons in America. We are coining this the “Australian Hamptons“.

2. Did you have a specific design aesthetic that you wanted to achieve?

This is our own farm property and has been in my husband’s family for 5 generations. We had the opportunity to purchase the cottage and land around 3 years ago.

I always wanted to build a Hamptons home on a grand scale as they are in the Hamptons, however you just can’t achieve this in suburbia , so we decided to build this around the original farm cottage to create our very own lifestyle property.

My style is very much the Hamptons style but the ‘Hamptons is such a broad umbrella “ so with this build I didn’t want the cookie cutter look, I really wanted to bring this home to life by creating spaces that embellished my style under the umbrella.

Some areas of the home have a twist of British colonial, plantation, coastal, Caribbean very eclectic which is actually more of what you see in these style of homes in America.

3. What was the most challenging part of the process?

Given this is a rural property we had no electricity no water and an hour and a half away from the city - totally country, so to build and have trades and work in that environment is very different form inner city or suburbia builds.

Also we had a tight time line, it took us 11 months to build whereas this size of a home would normally take at least 36 months so the scheduling had to be incredibly well done.

Also the scale of this home is huge!!! We have 5 living areas , 5 bedrooms, a fully self-contained studio and then a full estate style outdoor area, so everything was more, it was large and it was by far the biggest home I have ever built and furnished!!

It took me 3 weeks to just get all the furniture in the home with 8, 20 ft container loads whereas it would only normally take 2-3 days and 1 container so challenging yes but very worthwhile!

4. Which room in the house is your favourite?

This is like choosing a favourite child!!! There are so many spaces that are amazing.

I love the large scale of the north wing with kitchen - this area we spend most of our time with bifold doors open looking out to the pool. However the south wing provides a sense of calm with the blue and caramel tones!! it is very hard to pick just one.

I think the thing I love most is that I was able to create the spaces with all the colourways I wanted to showcase so many different feels that I love!!! When you are exposed to so many beautiful pieces it is hard to say no to any, so I have created rooms so I can style, play and create to my heart's content!!
